SPI PHOTO ALBUM - Fall 2003
10/26/03 - First Serious Norther Blows In
Island residents were digging in the drawers for those musty-sweatshirt thingies today. Lots of rain and pretty good wind, too. (Maybe tomorrow I will post a shot of what the storm did to my less-then-one-season-old patio umbrella - it's pretty brutal stuff, though.)
10/25/03 - Still Standing
This photo of Dan Doubleday's 1st place winning sculpture was still standing five days after the contest was over - and might still be there today for all we know.
Sand Castle Days Photos and videos have been posted at the event web-site. Also, see Dad Feet's post-contest photo tour exclusively on spionline.com.
10/22/03 - Dad Feet's Tuna
Don "Dad Feets" Wierenga caught this baby on the Osprey yesterday - shown here with fishing companion Fred "SPIgeek" Mallett who caught 3 tuna of his own. According to reports, a good time was had by all.
10/19/03 - Sand Castle Days Winds Down
Thanks to an well-timed shift in the weather and the hard work of lots of talented and dedicated people, Sand Castle Days '03 will have to go down in history as the most succesful yet. Check out contest results at sandcastledays.com - will be posting photos later this week.
10/14/03 - "Sand Castle Island"
Work on the Sand Castle Days demo sculpture came to a screeching halt today when it started raining cats and dogs and pigs and -- well, it was a deluge. Visiting master sculptors pitched in to dig a channel for the water to drain and raise forms around the sculpture's base to keep all the sand from running out with the water. Special thanks to "Dad Feets" for the photo.
Work on the sculpture will commence tomorrow - the latest forecast suggests things will be a lot drier. If we can get all of our technical difficulties squared away, you should be able to see what is happening at spi-cam.com.
The Transition - Bikefest to Sand Castle Days
The island is roaring this weekend, but you can still find some quiet spots - like the beach! Visiting master sand sculptor Suzanne Altamare (Daytona Beach) came early to entertain the crowds at Boomerang Billy's with her Harley-flavered sand sculpture. Stop by and see what she is up to!
And don't forget Sand Castle Days '03 - starting 10/13/03 at the Sheraton.
This is a busy time of year for the local sand sculptors. While half of the SoBs were building the unlitter castle pictured above (photo by Dennis) at the Sheraton for the beach clean up, the other half were busy winning multiple awards at the North American Championship in Virginia Beach. Walk for Women
A Day of Breast Cancer Awareness
One of the coolest things about living here is the way the community pulls together when one of our own is is need. Jayanna is fighting cancer and we are all going to fight along with her on Sun., Oct. 5th with a march against breast cancer, a party at Jake's, silent auction and other fun stuff. To get involved, contact Gomez Real Estate (956-761-2979) or Rennetta Silva (761-5452.) For a printable version of the poster, click here!
The first blue norther of the season blew through today -- putting a serious damper on many a vacationer's weekend. But what a gorgeous sunset! Captured by spi-cam, currently stationed aboard the Sweat Equity and submitted by Capt. Fred.
What a nice welcome home present! In case you missed the little article on me your humble web wiz, and my "dream job", in this week's People Magazine - I just happen to have a spare copy of it right here! ;-)
