SPRING BREAK 2002 Newsletter Archives

Issue #4 - posted 2/8/02

A lot of the spring breaker e-mail I get suggests that many of you
see South Padre Island as some sort of Brigadoon type town that
only wakes up once a year when March comes around.
This is only partially true. We have our usual large
population of Winter Texans in town, and things actually got quite
lively the other day at Schlitterbahn's Super Bowl party ... for a
while anyway. The blue-haired set was snapping up the
complimentary strands of beads, koozies, door prizes, dollar
margaritas and hotdogs as fast as the staff could bring them out
-- but a large majority of them had exited before the brief but
exciting Rams come-back in the last quarter.
I stuck around to the end in hopes of winning the grandest door
prize of the night - a hot tub party for 20 ("bathing suits
optional") - but had to settle for a Club at Rio Beach t-shirt,
cap, Budweiser bottle opener/keychain and three strands of glow-
in-the-dark beads. Not a bad haul, at that.
Anyway, it is always exciting when late Feb. rolls around and
the first wave of pale Canadian breakers arrive, signalling the
brief transition period where the average age of island
inhabitants drops from 55 to 20 in a matter of days. We eagerly
await your arrival!

Speaking of Schlitterbahn Freebies - I have the pleasure of
announcing the first winners of our newsletter give-away. Tracey
Dickau (University of Connecticut) and Roy Ramirez (school/
location unknown) will be receiving complimentary day passes
courtesy of Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark. With these passes,
Tracey and Roy will be able to party all day and all night long
on the date of their choice. Congrats to you both!
All subscribers to this list will have another opportunity to win
next week, of course. Please note that you must be 18+ to win.

Spring Break FAQ
The most frequently-asked question I am getting these days goes
something like this: "My break is on one of the "shoulder weeks"
(i.e., _not during Texas Week) - will there still be stuff to do
and lots of people there?"
Since the magical visor I use to see into the future is in the
shop this week, I will have to trot my answer down the slippery
path of spring breaks past.
There will be lots of high-school/college aged people here
starting in late Feb. and extending through the first week in
April. While it is true that organized and corporate-sponsored
activities will get off to a relatively late start and peter out
sometime before April, the "18+" clubs will still be open and
attracting those of like mind and age. Roving groups of breakers
will be seen heading purposefully up and down the sidewalks of
Padre Blvd. Those of you who plan to be here the last week of
March can expect a big influx of partiers from south of the
border as Easter week ("Semana Santa") comes early this year.

Short answer: There will still be people to party with here.
There won't be much in the way of concerts, etc. but take comfort
in knowing that you will be paying far less for your rooms than
the folks coming during the peak of spring break.

Lodging News - Wristband Free Zones
This week I would like to draw your attention to three spring
break-friendly property managers who find the idea of wristbands
as distasteful as a notable percentage of you seem to. These are
beach house apartments or condos, which means you get fully-
equipped kitchens. All three of the properties below have been
added to the map located here.

Terra Mar 4-plex: Six Persons Per Condo; $1000 per week (Sat-
Sat); Deposit required in advance (Not refundable for
cancellation within two weeks of stay). Located north end of town,
near the Bahia Mar.

Naturally's Beach House Suites: all units include covered
patio - great for barbecue - coffeemaker, toaster, microwave, full
kitchen with all utensils, stereo, cable tv, etc. Located in the
entertainment section of the island near the Radisson. BEACH HOUSE
at 105 E Coral #1 & #2.- 2 bedroom units which sleep 8 each;
$1500/week per unit. #3: 1 bedroom unit sleeps 6 - $1100/week.

Tres Palmas Bungalows: Four Units - Right across the street
from the beach, close to the Radisson. Each bungalow has a private
deck off the master bedroom, large deck off the living room, 2
bedrooms, one bath, fully equipped kitchen with bar, dining and
living area. Each bungalow is equipped to sleep 6-8 people;
Rates: $1400/week.

Word to the Wise
Today's headlines - TABC (Texas Alcohalic Beverage Commission)
has allocated extra money this year to nabbing underage drinkers
on SPI during spring break. There will be 36 agents here March
7-21. Also, the Brownsville police dept. will be targeting
intoxicated minors crossing the Mexican border. Best plan? get a room in Matamoros!

Reminder: If you are new to this list, be sure to check out
the archived back-issues as many of the info there is still
pertinent and may answer some of the questions you have included
in your subscription form. To access the archives, click here.
